Babu Jagjivan Ram was a key figure in the struggle for Dalit rights...  He rose to prominence as a champion for the marginalized, advocating for social justice and equality...  He served in various important governmental roles, including as the Deputy Prime Minister of India, and played a crucial part in shaping policies related to rural development, labor rights, and education...

In 1991, India Post released a 1-rupee postage stamp in honor of the great leader, recognizing his immense contributions to social reform and his legacy as a champion for Dalit rights and social justice...

5-July... Mechanical Pencil Day...


Today (5-jul), is celebrated as Mechanical Pencil Day, a day dedicated to honoring the history of mechanical pencils and encouraging people to recognize their diverse uses in our everyday life.

The mechanical pencil was invented by Croatian engineer Slavoljub Penkala in 1906, revolutionizing the way people wrote...  His innovation eliminated the need for sharpening, with a mechanism that fed graphite into the pencil as it was used...  Penkala, who held numerous patents, designed the first commercially successful model, which quickly gained popularity...  His invention not only improved everyday writing but also became a key milestone in the development of modern writing instruments...

As a part of Europa 1994 Issue - Discoveries and Inventions, Croatian Postal administration commemorated the Mechanical Pencil and its inventor Slavoljub Penkala, with the release of postage stamp valued at 4000-Croatian dinars...

4-July... Birth anniversary of Calvin Coolidge...

 

On this day (4-jul), the birth anniversary of Calvin Coolidge, a quiet, pro-business President who advocated for limited government during the economic prosperity of the 1920s - is commemorated...

Nicknamed "Silent Cal" Coolidge strongly believed in limited government, fiscal responsibility which he implemented during a time of significant economic growth known as the "Roaring Twenties"...  He reduced taxes, cut government spending, and paid down the National debt.

Born in the year 1872, Calvin Coolidge was instrumental in signing the Indian Citizenship Act, which granted full US citizenship to Native Americans while maintaining their right to their tribal lands... He signed the Revenue Act of 1924, which decreased personal Income Tax rates, increased Estate taxes, and reduced the Federal debt.  

In 1986, Calvin Coolidge was featured on a 22-cent stamp as part of the 1986 Ameripex Presidential commemorative set...

3-July... Launch of construction of Vidyasagar Setu...

This day (3-Jul), the construction of the iconic Vidyasagar Setu, also known as the 2nd Hooghly Bridge, began in 1979... Spanning the River Hooghly in Kolkata, it stands as one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in India and is also recognized among the longest in Asia... The project was completed after more than a decade of work and the bridge was officially opened to the public in 1992...

The bridge is named after the renowned education reformer Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and in 2007, India Post honored its significance by issuing a 5-rupee postage stamp in its commemoration... 

The Vidyasagar Setu remains a vital link in Kolkata’s infrastructure and a symbol of engineering excellence in the region... Its design and scale continue to inspire awe, serving as a testament to both technological advancement and cultural heritage...
